Joshua 17:4-6

What does Joshua 17:4-6 mean?

What's easy to miss here is the quiet bravery of these women. They approached the highest authorities—the priest, the commander-in-chief, and the tribal leaders—not with demands, but by reminding them of God's direct command given through Moses. Their request was rooted not in personal ambition, but in God's stated will, ensuring their father’s name and inheritance wouldn't vanish from their family line.

They approached Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the leaders and said, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance along with our brothers.” So according to the mouth of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father. Thus there fell to Manasseh ten portions, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan, because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance along with his sons. The land of Gilead was allotted to the rest of the people of Manasseh.

What Joshua 17:4-6 means

The daughters of Zelophehad, whose father died without sons, are now stepping forward to claim their rightful inheritance within the tribe of Manasseh. They remind Joshua and the leaders of God's direct command to Moses, ensuring that their family name wouldn't disappear and that they would receive land alongside their male relatives. This pivotal moment highlights how God's law, even when breaking tradition, is meticulously applied as the land division continues.

Bold Faith and Legal Rights

Imagine standing up to the most powerful leaders, not with a sword, but with God's own word. These women did just that!

The daughters of Zelophehad weren't just asking for a handout; they were demanding their rightful inheritance based on a direct command from God to Moses. They bravely approached Joshua, Eleazar the priest, and the tribal leaders, reminding them of this divine instruction. This wasn't a matter of tribal custom or male privilege, but of obedience to the LORD's will. Their boldness in recalling God's word ensured their father's name and legacy would continue, a powerful testament to how faith can secure our place, both in earthly matters and in God's eternal kingdom.

God's Word, The Ultimate Authority

In a world of shifting opinions and changing rules, where do we find solid ground? The answer lies in the unshakeable Word of the LORD.

The story of the daughters of Zelophehad highlights a crucial principle: God's command overrides all other considerations. Even though Manasseh was a prominent tribe, and traditionally inheritances followed male lines, the divine word to Moses set a new precedent. Joshua and the leaders didn't rely on their own judgment or tradition; they acted 'according to the commandment of the LORD.' This demonstrates that true justice and rightful inheritance flow from obedience to God's revealed will. It reminds us that God's decrees are the highest law, and His people are called to honor them, ensuring that His promises are fulfilled.
