Joshua 17:11-13

What does Joshua 17:11-13 mean?

This verse lists six cities belonging to Manasseh but located within the territories of Issachar and Asher. What's easy to miss is that the text emphasizes not just the land but "the inhabitants" of these cities, highlighting Manasseh's failure to fully drive out the Canaanites, as later verses reveal.

Also in Issachar and in Asher Manasseh had Beth-shean and its villages, and Ibleam and its villages, and the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its villages, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; the third is Naphath. Yet the people of Manasseh could not take possession of those cities, but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. Now when the people of Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.

What Joshua 17:11-13 means

This passage is part of the larger account of dividing the land of Canaan among the twelve tribes. It follows an argument from the descendants of Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh) who felt their allotted inheritance was too small, and Joshua's response encouraging them to conquer more territory. Here, the text details specific cities and regions that were assigned to the tribe of Manasseh, even though they were located within the territories of Issachar and Asher. This listing highlights the complex and sometimes overlapping nature of the land divisions.

Tribal Borders: More Than Just Lines

Ever feel like your assigned 'space' doesn't quite fit? This verse reveals how God's promises sometimes extend beyond neat boundaries, requiring tribes to share and adapt.

Joshua 17:11 highlights a complex land distribution for the tribe of Manasseh. Instead of being confined solely to their designated territory, Manasseh also received cities within the tribal lands of Issachar and Asher.

Why the Overlap?

Compensation: Some scholars suggest this was a way to compensate Manasseh, especially the Joseph tribes (Ephraim and Manasseh), when their own allotted lands were deemed too narrow or had been partially given to others (like Levitical cities).
Geographic Reality: The initial division of land was complex. Sometimes, cities were granted based on practical considerations or geographical proximity rather than strict tribal lines.
Shared Inheritance: It underscores that the entire land was an inheritance from God for all Israel. While tribes had primary portions, God's plan allowed for flexibility and interdependence.

The Persistent Canaanites: Unfinished Conquests

God promised victory, but this verse lists cities still inhabited by the enemy. What does this tension between promise and reality teach us about spiritual warfare?
