The city given to Caleb was no ordinary town. It was a place with a fearsome reputation, holding a key historical significance.
The verse identifies Hebron by its ancient name, 'Kiriath-arba,' and links it to 'Arba the father of Anak.' This points to the city's connection with the Anakim, a race of giants known for their imposing stature and the fear they inspired.
A Symbol of Fear
When the spies first scouted the land, Hebron was a prominent Anakite stronghold (Numbers 13:22). The presence of such formidable inhabitants understandably struck fear into the hearts of the Israelites.
Caleb's Courage
Yet, it was precisely this challenging territory that God promised to Caleb. Caleb's willingness to claim and conquer Hebron, despite its giants, demonstrates incredible faith in God's power to overcome any obstacle. It was a strategic city, and its possession was a major step in securing the land.
