What's easy to miss is that Caleb isn't just reminiscing about being kept alive; he's highlighting God's faithfulness in the timing of His promises. The forty-five years span from when God first spoke to Moses about Caleb's inheritance to the present day, emphasizing that God's promises, even those delayed by Israel's wilderness wandering, are ultimately fulfilled. This isn't just about survival; it's about the Lord actively preserving him for this specific moment of inheritance.
And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Joshua and the tribes are in the process of dividing the Promised Land through casting lots, a task overseen by Joshua and Eleazar. Caleb, a representative of the tribe of Judah, steps forward to claim his inheritance, specifically the challenging hill country of Hebron. He reminds Joshua of a promise God made to him through Moses forty-five years prior, vouching for his faithfulness during their time in the wilderness.
Caleb declares he's 85 years old, but he remembers a promise from God spoken over 45 years prior. What does this tell us about God's character and His promises?
Caleb's statement is a powerful testimony to God's faithfulness. He links his present age and situation directly to a word God spoke to Moses when Caleb was a young man (Deuteronomy 1:36). God promised Caleb that he would enter the promised land because of his faithful spirit. Forty-five years later, in the midst of the land division, Caleb is alive and well, ready to claim his inheritance.
Caleb was 40 when he spied the land and 85 when he claimed his inheritance. What was he doing for those 45 years, and how did it prepare him?
Caleb's journey highlights the crucial link between faithfulness in difficult seasons and readiness for God's blessings. When Caleb was 40, he and Joshua were the only spies who trusted God's promise to give them the land, despite the formidable giants (Numbers 13:30-33).
