What does Joshua 13:3-5 mean?

This verse highlights that even though the Philistines were the current occupants, this land was still considered "Canaanite" by God. This means it was divinely designated for Israel, underscoring that current possession doesn't change God's ultimate ownership or promises.

(from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of the Avvim, in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of the Amorites, and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath,

What Joshua 13:3-5 means

God is directing Joshua to delineate the inherited lands for the Israelite tribes, but He first points out the territories that are still occupied by enemies and thus remain unconquered. This specific passage focuses on the western coastal region, detailing the lands still under the control of the Philistines and the original inhabitants, the Avites, emphasizing that this land, though occupied by others, rightfully belongs to Israel according to God's promise.

The Line Between Promised and Possessed

God told Joshua there was still 'very much land' left to conquer. This verse draws a stark geographical line between what was divinely promised and what was still occupied by enemies. It's a powerful reminder of an ongoing spiritual journey.

This verse marks a specific boundary: "From Sihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron." This isn't just a geographical marker; it represents the frontier between the land God promised to Israel and the territories still held by hostile nations.

The Starting Point: "Sihor, which is east of Egypt" likely refers to the Wadi el-Arish, a border river, signifying the southwestern edge of the promised land. It's the edge of the known, the border of the familiar, touching the mighty empire of Egypt.
The Northern Limit: The boundary extends "northward to the boundary of Ekron," a major Philistine city. This marks the northernmost extent of this particular description of enemy territory.
Categorizing the Occupants: The text explicitly states this region, though occupied by the Philistines, "is counted as Canaanite." This highlights that, regardless of who was currently living there, God's original decree designated this land for Israel. The Philistines themselves were not Canaanites by descent but had dispossessed them, further complicating the ownership in human terms, but not in God's decree.

This sets the stage for the immense task still ahead for Israel, even after significant victories.
