This verse describes a brutal conquest, leaving none alive. How can we understand such a harsh command from a loving God?
Joshua 10:40 summarizes a series of devastating victories where no one was spared. This wasn't Joshua's initiative or a result of unchecked aggression. The text is clear: 'as the LORD God of Israel commanded.'
A Divine Mandate
This act of total destruction, known as 'devotion to destruction' or 'herem,' was a specific command given to Israel concerning the Canaanite peoples. It wasn't about ethnic cleansing for its own sake. Instead, it was a divine judgment on societies deeply steeped in idolatry, child sacrifice, and other abominations (Leviticus 18:24-28).
Preventing Corruption
God's primary concern was to protect His people from spiritual and moral corruption. Allowing these nations to survive would have inevitably led Israel astray, jeopardizing their unique covenant relationship with God and their role as His chosen people. The command was designed to create a clean slate for Israel, enabling them to worship God alone in the land He was giving them.
