What Joshua 10:3-5 means

Fearing the rapid advance of Joshua after the conquest of Jericho and Ai, King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem rallies the kings of surrounding cities into a coalition. Their immediate target is the city of Gibeon, which had recently made a peace treaty with Israel, a move seen as a betrayal by these Canaanite kings. This verse details Adoni-zedek's call to arms, seeking military aid from four other kings to crush Gibeon and push back the Israelite invasion.

The King of Jerusalem's Call to Arms

When threats arise, who do you turn to? For these kings, it was a desperate alliance.

The passage highlights a coalition forming against Israel, initiated by Adoni-zedek, the king of Jerusalem. His immediate action is to send for help from other kings: Hoham of Hebron, Piram of Jarmuth, Japhia of Lachish, and Debir of Eglon.

A United Front of Opposition

This wasn't just a small skirmish; it was a strategic alliance. The kings recognized the growing threat Israel posed, especially after hearing about the swift and decisive victories at Jericho and Ai. Gibeon's decision to ally with Israel was seen as a betrayal that endangered them all, prompting this unified response.

Motivation: Fear and Self-Preservation

Their primary motivation wasn't necessarily a love for each other, but a shared fear. Gibeon was a significant city, and its alliance with Israel meant the enemy was now within their sphere of influence. This fear drove them to band together, hoping to present a united front to crush the Gibeonites and push back Israel.
