Their enthusiastic "All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go" isn't just blind obedience; it's a profound trust transfer. They're essentially saying, "We'll follow you as faithfully as we followed Moses, because we believe God is with you just as He was with him."
And they answered Joshua, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. Only may the LORD your God be with you, as he was with Moses! Whoever rebels against your commandment and disobeys your words, whatever you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Joshua has just been commissioned by God and encouraged to be strong and courageous, reminding him of his upcoming task: leading the people across the Jordan River to conquer the promised land. He then commands the officers of the people to prepare for this great undertaking and specifically addresses the Reubenites, Gadites, and half of Manasseh, reminding them of their promise to Moses to help their brethren conquer Canaan before returning to their own inheritance. This verse records their enthusiastic and unwavering commitment to obey Joshua's commands and follow him wherever he leads them, pledging their allegiance to him as they did to Moses.
Imagine standing on the brink of a monumental task, a promised future so close, yet guarded by formidable challenges. What does true commitment look like in such moments?
The people's response to Joshua is striking in its unqualified nature: 'All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.' This isn't a hesitant 'we'll try'; it's a full-throated pledge of absolute obedience. This kind of commitment echoes the faith God requires. It’s about trusting the leader God has appointed, even when the path ahead is uncertain and the demands are significant. It means surrendering our own plans and preferences for the sake of God's mission.
When a beloved and powerful leader departs, how do we transfer our trust and loyalty to the next in line, especially when facing immense challenges?
The people explicitly link their obedience to Joshua with their past obedience to Moses: 'As we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you' (Joshua 1:17). This wasn't just about following orders; it was an acknowledgment that God had indeed appointed Joshua as the new leader. Their pledge signifies a profound understanding that Joshua’s authority derived from God, just as Moses’ had. This is crucial for us today: our allegiance isn't just to human leaders, but to the Lord Jesus, who is our ultimate Captain. True loyalty to Christ means honoring the roles and authorities He establishes, recognizing they are extensions of His own divine appointment.
