Jonah wasn't just displeased; the Hebrew word literally means "it was evil to Jonah." This wasn't just disappointment, but a deep-seated anger rooted in a mistaken patriotism and perhaps even Jewish exclusiveness, believing God's mercy should not extend to their enemies.
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. And he prayed to the LORD and said, “O LORD, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

Jonah's anger stems not from personal humiliation, but from a deep-seated patriotic and religious exclusivism, unable to comprehend God's grace extending beyond Israel to their enemies and oppressors.

This parable shows Jesus challenging a similar exclusivist mindset. Just as the 'neighbor' is redefined to include the Samaritan, Jonah's anger at God's mercy to the hated Ninevites highlights a reluctance to extend compassion beyond one's own group.
Jonah's anger that the Ninevites were shown mercy, despite his own repentance and experience of God's forgiveness, mirrors the unforgiving servant who refused to forgive a fellow servant after being forgiven a greater debt by his master.
Jonah knew God's character – 'gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.' His anger stemmed from God acting precisely according to His revealed nature, which Jonah found difficult to accept for a hated enemy.
Romans 9:19-24Paul addresses the tension between God's sovereignty and human responsibility, using the potter and clay analogy. Jonah's anger reflects a human attempt to question or dictate God's rights and ways in dealing with nations, similar to the impatience displayed by those questioning God's actions.
2 Samuel 6:8The phrase 'very angry' used for Jonah is the same Hebrew expression used to describe David's reaction when Uzzah was struck down. Both instances show intense emotional distress, though for different reasons, in response to divine action.
barnesJonah 4:1: "But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry."
And Jonah was displeased exceedingly - It was an untempered zeal. The prophet himself records it as such, and how he was reproved for it. He would, like many of us, govern God's world better than God Himself. Short-sighted and presumptuous! Yet not more short-sighted than those who, in fact, quarrel with God's Providence, the existence of evil, the baffling of good, "the prison walls of obstacles and trials," in what we wo…
clarkeJonah 4:1: "But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry."
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly - This hasty, and indeed inconsiderate prophet, was vexed because his prediction was not fulfilled. He had more respect to his high sense of his own honor than he had to the goodness and mercy of God. He appeared to care little whether six hundred and twenty thousand persons were destroyed or not, so he might not pass for a deceiver, or one that denounced a falsity. And he was very angry…
