Jesus isn't just talking about biological lineage; he's cutting to the core of what it means to be Abraham's child. The truly non-obvious insight here is that true fatherhood isn't just about genetics, but about the imitation of character and actions, a concept Paul later develops in his letters. Therefore, Jesus implies that their actions—seeking to kill him—demonstrate they are not Abraham's spiritual children at all, regardless of their ancestry.
They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just revealed that he knows they are Abraham's descendants but is hinting at a spiritual father who is not Abraham. The Jewish leaders, clinging to their physical lineage, claim Abraham as their father, asserting their spiritual purity and God's favor. Jesus counters this by challenging their claim, stating that true children of Abraham would act like him, implying their current actions prove they are not.
When Jesus talked with the Jewish leaders, they proudly declared, 'Abraham is our father.' But Jesus challenged their claim. What did it truly mean to be Abraham's child?
The religious leaders in John 8 were relying on their physical lineage from Abraham. They boasted of being his descendants, believing this automatically made them righteous in God's eyes.
The Boast of Bloodline
Jesus' Radical Redefinition
Jesus cut through this assumption. He stated that true 'children' of Abraham wouldn't just share his DNA; they would share his heart and actions. It's not about where you come from, but whose you are and how you live.
Jesus didn't just point out their error; he gave them a test: 'You would be doing the works Abraham did.' What were these foundational 'works'?
Abraham's defining characteristic was his faith, which led to obedience.

The Contrast
Jesus highlights that the leaders' desire to kill Him was the opposite of Abraham's character. True descendants of Abraham would act like him – trusting God and His messengers, not plotting murder.
