Jesus doesn't just mean committing a single wrong act, but rather "practicing sin" implies a habitual lifestyle, where sin defines your very identity and actions. The definite article before "sin" in the original language points to this ongoing, pervasive state rather than isolated incidents.
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus is responding to a group who claim to be Abraham's descendants and never enslaved, but He's shifting the conversation from political bondage to a deeper spiritual slavery. He asserts that anyone who habitually practices sin is enslaved to it, a stark contrast to the freedom He offers through truth. This leads into His explanation that unlike a slave, a son remains in the household forever, implying a true freedom that comes only through His sonship.
Jesus declares that 'everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.' What does 'practices' really mean here? It’s more than just an occasional stumble.
When Jesus says 'everyone who practices sin,' He's not talking about a single mistake or a moment of weakness. The Greek word translated 'practices' (or 'committeth') points to a continuous action, a way of life, a habit.
Not Just an Act, But a Lifestyle
Think of it like a river carving a deeper channel over time. The more sin is practiced, the deeper the groove, and the harder it becomes to steer away from it.
The leaders claimed they were Abraham's free descendants. But Jesus reveals a deeper truth: practicing sin makes you a slave, regardless of your heritage.

Jesus is drawing a stark contrast between true freedom and a false sense of liberty. The Jews believed they were free because they weren't under foreign political rule. Jesus reframes freedom entirely.
The Nature of Sin's Slavery
Jesus is pointing out that their pride in their lineage blinded them to their actual spiritual condition: enslaved to sin and its desires.
