John 8:31-36

What does John 8:31-36 mean?

Jesus doesn't just accept their belief at face value; He sets a crucial condition: continuing in His word. This highlights that true discipleship isn't a one-time decision but a persistent, active engagement with His teachings, proving their commitment beyond a fleeting moment of conviction.

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

What John 8:31-36 means

After Jesus declared that those who embrace his teachings would be set free, a group of Jews who had begun to believe in him responded with pride in their heritage as Abraham's descendants. Jesus then addressed these new believers, highlighting that genuine discipleship isn't just about a moment of belief, but about a continuous commitment to his teachings. He directly contrasts this true discipleship with the superficial claims of freedom based on ancestry, which would soon lead to a fierce debate about true spiritual lineage and freedom from sin.

Believing vs. Abiding in His Word

Many 'believed' Jesus' message, but Jesus pointed to something deeper than a fleeting agreement. What’s the difference between acknowledging truth and living it?

Jesus addresses the Jews who had begun to believe Him. The original language here suggests a rudimentary or initial faith, a step towards believing on Him.

A Deeper Commitment

Believing Him: This is acknowledging that what Jesus says is true. It’s an intellectual assent.
Abiding in His Word: This goes further. It means to remain in, to hold fast to, and to live out what Jesus teaches. It’s about allowing His words to shape your life and thoughts.

Jesus highlights that true discipleship isn't just about the initial 'yes' to His message, but a continuous commitment to live by His teachings.

The 'Indeed' of True Discipleship

Jesus promised that if they abided in His word, they would be His disciples 'indeed.' What makes a disciple 'real' in God's eyes?

The word translated 'indeed' here speaks of genuineness, reality, and truth. Jesus is setting a clear standard for what it means to be His follower.
