Nicodemus, who once met Jesus in the secrecy of night, now speaks in the daylight, even among his accusers. What sparks this change?
It's easy to see Nicodemus as just the 'man who came by night.' But John’s Gospel shows us growth, even if slow and cautious.
A Timid Beginning
When Nicodemus first sought Jesus (John 3), he came under the cover of darkness. This wasn't just about avoiding the sun; it was about avoiding the judgment and scorn of his peers—the religious leaders of Israel.
A Seed of Conviction
However, that secret encounter planted a seed. While he didn't openly follow Jesus then, he clearly couldn't shake Jesus's words or authority. This inner conviction starts to push him.
The Courageous Question
Here in John 7, we see him using his position within the Sanhedrin, the very group likely plotting against Jesus. Instead of a bold declaration, he asks a question rooted in their own law: 'Does our law judge a man before it hears him?' This is a subtle, yet powerful, act of resistance. It’s a sign that God’s truth, once encountered, can inspire even the most fearful to find their voice, however quietly at first.
