When Jesus spoke, the crowd's reaction wasn't uniform. Some recognized Him as 'the Prophet.' But what did that title even mean to them?
A Specific Prophetic Role
The title 'the Prophet' here points to a very specific Old Testament expectation. The people are referencing Deuteronomy 18:15, where Moses prophesied that God would raise up 'a prophet like me' from among their people.
- What did 'like Moses' imply? Moses was the great lawgiver, mediator, and deliverer for Israel. To call Jesus 'the Prophet' suggested they saw Him fulfilling a similar, authoritative role in bringing God's message and power.
- A Role Distinct from the Messiah: Notice that some identified Jesus as 'the Prophet' and others later in the passage as 'the Christ' (Messiah). This shows that for many, these were initially seen as potentially different roles, or at least a distinct aspect of who Jesus was.
This was a significant acknowledgment, recognizing divine authority in Jesus' words, even if it didn't immediately lead to full belief in Him as the Messiah.
