People heard Jesus speak and immediately started guessing who He was. One of the most common guesses was 'the Prophet.' But who was this 'Prophet' they were talking about?
The people in John 7 are responding to Jesus' powerful words. Their immediate thought isn't necessarily 'Messiah,' but 'the Prophet.' This points to a specific expectation rooted in the Old Testament.
A Promise from Moses
The prophet they're referencing is the one Moses foretold in Deuteronomy 18:15: 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people.'
Multiple Interpretations
This prophecy was understood in a few ways:
- A Prophet like Moses: Some saw this as a sign of a prophetic office, similar to Moses, who would deliver God's message.
- A Fore-runner of the Messiah: Others believed this prophet would come before the Messiah, perhaps announcing His arrival.
- The Messiah Himself: A more direct interpretation saw this promised prophet as the Messiah.
In this passage, when some say 'This really is the Prophet,' they're acknowledging Jesus' divine authority and prophetic gifting, but it's not yet a full confession of Him as the Messiah. It’s a step, but not the destination for everyone.
