Jesus declares His own testimony about Himself isn't true if He's alone. What does this mean when He also claims His word IS true?
Jesus speaks here according to common human understanding. Normally, if someone only testifies about themselves, we're right to be skeptical. Our own desires and biases can easily distort our self-perception and testimony.
The Human Standard
In everyday life, a judge wouldn't accept a case based solely on one person's word about themselves. It's logical to seek external confirmation. Jesus acknowledges this principle: If He only spoke of Himself, without any other support, His claims wouldn't be reliable by human standards.
A Concession, Not a Contradiction
This isn't a contradiction to other places where Jesus affirms His testimony is true. He's making a concession to the Jews' likely objections. He's saying, 'Even by your rules of evidence, my testimony would fall short if it stood alone.' But, as we'll see, it doesn't stand alone.
