John 4:20-24

What does John 4:20-24 mean?

The woman isn't just stating a historical fact; she's subtly shifting the conversation to a point of deep national pride and controversy for her people. By bringing up "this mountain" versus Jerusalem, she's trying to sidestep Jesus' penetrating question about her personal life and engage him on a topic where her people felt they had a strong, divinely sanctioned claim.

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

What John 4:20-24 means

Jesus has just revealed He knows about the woman's past relationships, striking a nerve and causing her to shift the conversation. She quickly turns to the age-old religious dispute between Samaritans and Jews, pointing to Mount Gerizim as the traditional Samaritan place of worship, contrasting it with the Jewish insistence on Jerusalem. This question, deeply important to her people, serves as a way to avoid further personal examination by Jesus.

Deflecting the Truth

When Jesus began to uncover the woman's hidden life, she didn't confront the truth. Instead, she skillfully changed the subject.

Shifting the Spotlight

The conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman takes a sharp turn at John 4:20. Jesus, with divine insight, has just touched on her tumultuous personal history, hinting at her five previous marriages and current unlawful relationship. Instead of engaging with this deeply personal revelation, the woman pivots the discussion.

She seizes on the immediate physical landmark – Mount Gerizim – and raises a long-standing religious debate between Jews and Samaritans: where is the proper place to worship God?

A Shield of Tradition: This question about worship was a 'safe' topic. It appealed to tradition and national identity, a far cry from the raw, uncomfortable truth of her own life.
A Common Tactic: This is a classic deflection. When confronted with personal sin or uncomfortable truths, people often shift to external, less threatening subjects, like politics, religion, or even sports.
The Goal: The aim is to avoid introspection and accountability, to steer the conversation away from the 'self' and onto a more general, debatable ground.

The True Place of Worship

The argument over Gerizim vs. Jerusalem was fierce, but Jesus offered a perspective that completely redefined worship.
