The verse highlights that the Pharisees heard Jesus was "making and baptizing more disciples than John," but the detail worth noticing is the subtle phrasing that Jesus himself wasn't the one baptizing, but his disciples were doing it under his authority. This distinction is crucial because it shows how Jesus was building his movement, not just through his personal actions, but through the work of others empowered by him, thereby fulfilling his mission even as opposition mounted.
Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Learning that the Pharisees had heard Jesus was baptizing more disciples than John, Jesus knew it was time to withdraw from Judea for a while. This news about his growing popularity fueled the opposition from this powerful religious group, prompting him to depart for Galilee and pass through Samaria, where an unexpected encounter would soon take place.

This verse opens with Jesus learning that the Pharisees have heard about his ministry's success.
