Jesus tells Nicodemus something is absolutely essential to see God's kingdom. What does 'born again' truly mean? Is it a one-time event or a continuous process?
When Jesus says, 'Unless one is born again,' he's not just talking about a minor adjustment. The Greek word used here, 'anothen,' can mean 'again' or 'from above.' Both meanings are crucial.
Born Anew:
The idea of being born 'again' points to a fundamental transformation. It's a spiritual re-creation, a new beginning that contrasts sharply with our natural birth. Our first birth gives us life in this world, but it also introduces us to sin and separation from God. This 'again' birth signifies a shift from that old life to a new one centered on God.
Born From Above:
The 'from above' aspect highlights the divine origin of this new life. This isn't something we can achieve on our own; it's a gift from God, initiated and empowered by the Holy Spirit. It's about receiving a spiritual life that originates from God Himself, setting us apart and enabling us to perceive His kingdom.
Both aspects emphasize that seeing God's kingdom requires a radical, divinely-initiated change, not just a surface-level reform.
