The verse highlights that the "judgment" isn't some arbitrary act, but a direct consequence of humanity's choice: we actively "loved the darkness rather than the light." This wasn't an accidental oversight, but a deliberate preference rooted in the "evil" nature of our deeds, which naturally recoil from the exposure truth brings.
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just explained to Nicodemus that spiritual rebirth is necessary to see God's kingdom. Now, he clarifies that the reason people don't accept this truth isn't because God's message is hidden, but because they actively prefer their own ways. This preference for darkness over light reveals their inner state and the true reason for their condemnation.
Why does Jesus say the light reveals judgment rather than causing it? It’s a subtle but crucial distinction that shifts the blame back to us.
Jesus explains that His coming into the world doesn't create judgment; it exposes it. Think of a room filled with dust. You can’t blame the flashlight for revealing the dust; the dust was always there. The light simply makes it visible. The judgment isn't an arbitrary act of God, but the natural consequence of choosing to hide in the darkness when the light, which is Christ, has come. God’s intention in sending Jesus was salvation (John 3:17), but the natural outcome of rejecting that salvation is judgment. The light makes the hidden evil works apparent, and the choice to remain in that hiddenness is where condemnation lies.
It’s one thing to tolerate darkness, but Jesus says people actively loved it. What does this deep-seated preference reveal about us?
The core issue isn't just ignorance; it's a preference for the darkness. Jesus explains that this isn't a random choice. It stems from 'their works were evil.' Our actions have a powerful influence on our desires. When people are engaged in deeds they want to keep hidden—actions that are selfish, harmful, or contrary to God’s ways—they naturally shy away from the light. The light of Christ exposes these deeds, not to condemn them outright, but to call them to repentance. But if the heart is so attached to those evil works, it will reject the very light that could expose them, choosing instead to remain in the familiar comfort of darkness. It’s a cycle: evil deeds lead to a love of darkness, which leads to rejection of the light, further entrenching the evil.
