The narrative begins with "But there was a man," a subtle transition that highlights how this encounter, despite Nicodemus's prominence as a Pharisee and ruler, emerges from the broader context of Jesus's ministry and the growing crowds. This phrasing suggests that even among the religious elite, individuals like Nicodemus were drawn to Jesus, signaling that divine encounters aren't confined to the expected or obvious places.
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following Jesus's cleansing of the Temple and his signs in Jerusalem, the Gospel introduces Nicodemus, a prominent Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council. He is drawn to Jesus by the miracles he's witnessed, prompting him to seek a private meeting with Jesus.
Why does John bother to tell us Nicodemus is a Pharisee and a ruler? It's not just random trivia. These details paint a picture of a man at the top, yet searching for something more.
Nicodemus wasn't just any guy. He belonged to the Pharisees, a respected (and sometimes feared) religious party known for their strict adherence to the Law. This meant he was deeply invested in Jewish tradition and likely held a position of authority.
Nicodemus came to Jesus 'by night.' Why the secrecy? Was he a coward, a hypocrite, or something else entirely?
Coming under the cover of darkness wasn't necessarily a sign of hypocrisy, but likely a reflection of Nicodemus's complex situation and inner struggle. He was a prominent figure, and associating with Jesus, who was challenging the religious establishment, carried significant risks.

III. (1) There was a man.—Read, But there was a man. Our division of chapters breaks the connection, and the omission of the conjunction leads us to think of the visit of Nicodemus as quite distinct from what has gone before; whereas it really rises out of it (comp. John 3:2 with John 2:23). The name Nicodemus was not uncommon among the Jews, but like Stephen, Philip, Jason, etc., was derived from their intercou…

The interview with Nicodemus is, apart from the important truth which it embodies, an illustration of Christ's knowledge of what was in man. Godet truthfully observes that John reminds us by the word ἄνθρωπος (man), that Nicodemus was a specimen of the race which Jesus knew so well.Named NicodemusLiterally, Nicodemus, the name unto him.
