Picture this: you've been out all night, exhausted from fruitless work. As the first light of dawn appears, a figure stands on the shore. You can hear them, but you don't recognize them. What's going on here?
The verse tells us that as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples didn't know it was Him.
Factors at Play:
- Imperfect Light: The commentary reminds us that it was just dawn – not full daylight. The early morning light can play tricks on your eyes, making it hard to discern faces and forms from a distance.
- Physical Exhaustion: These disciples had been toiling all night. Their bodies and minds were likely weary, which can affect perception and recognition.
- Spiritual Fog: Beyond the physical, there's a sense that their eyes were 'held,' as some suggest. After the trauma of the crucifixion and the shock of the resurrection, perhaps their spiritual sight was still dim, making it difficult to recognize their Lord even when He was close.
