Mary's cry of 'Rabboni!' was more than just a polite address. It was the overflowing expression of a heart that had found its Master.
When Mary recognized Jesus, her immediate response was to call Him 'Rabboni.' This Aramaic word, translated as 'Teacher' or 'Master,' was a title of deep respect among the Jews, often reserved for highly esteemed rabbis.
A Title of Devotion
For Mary, 'Rabboni' wasn't just a designation; it was an outpouring of her profound love and recognition of Jesus' authority in her life. It signifies her joy and acknowledges Him as her ultimate guide and teacher, especially after the immense relief of finding Him alive.
Imperfect, Yet True Faith
While 'Rabboni' expresses deep reverence, the text suggests Mary's understanding was still developing. She saw Him as her beloved Teacher, but hadn't yet grasped the full reality of His resurrection glory. Her desire was to cling to the familiar relationship, not yet fully understanding the transformed nature of the resurrected Christ. Jesus' gentle redirection to 'do not cling to me' (John 20:17) points to this.
