Jesus isn't praying for his followers to be removed from the world's difficulties, but rather for protection from the specific influence of the "evil one," meaning Satan himself. This highlights that the real battle is spiritual, not just about escaping external troubles.
I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus is praying for his disciples, acknowledging that while He is leaving the world, they will remain to continue His work. He understands their future struggles and the world's opposition, but rather than asking for their immediate removal, He prays for divine protection that will enable them to endure and fulfill their mission.
Ever wished you could just escape the tough stuff? Jesus' prayer for his followers is surprisingly different. He didn't ask for an exit strategy, but for something else entirely.
Jesus prayed, 'I do not ask that you take them out of the world.' This wasn't a prayer for his disciples (or us!) to be removed from life's challenges or the presence of unbelievers. Why? Because they had a mission!
A Worldly Task
So if not removed, then what? Jesus' prayer pivots to a different kind of protection. It's not about immunity from the world, but about divine preservation.
Jesus asks the Father to 'keep them from the evil one.' This is a crucial distinction. The prayer isn't primarily about shielding believers from all evil or trouble, but from the ultimate destructive power of the Adversary.
