Why does the world react so strongly against God's people? Jesus gives a powerful reason tied directly to our identity in Him.
Jesus continues His thought by explaining why the world hates His followers. He says, 'If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.' (John 15:19)
This is key. The world loves what reflects its own values and belongs to its own sphere. When Jesus chose His disciples, He set them apart from the world’s system. They no longer primarily belong to the world’s definition of success, belonging, or morality. Their new identity is rooted in Christ.
Because they are now different – chosen by Christ, indwelt by His Spirit, living by His commands – they become a foreign element to the world. This difference, this separation, is precisely what triggers the world’s antipathy. It’s not necessarily because the disciples are doing anything 'wrong' by worldly standards, but because their very existence, their allegiance to Christ, stands in stark contrast to the world’s values.
This highlights a profound truth: our identity in Christ is what sets us apart and, paradoxically, can lead to friction with the world. The world's hatred, then, becomes a confirmation that we are truly 'in Christ' and not merely conforming to worldly expectations.
