Philip asks Jesus to 'show us the Father.' It sounds like a reasonable request, right? But Jesus' response carries a tone of gentle rebuke. Why was Philip's request so surprising to Jesus?
Jesus is highlighting that the revelation of God isn't a one-time event but an ongoing process. Philip had been with Jesus for a significant amount of time, witnessing His miracles, hearing His teachings, and experiencing His presence. Yet, he still seemed to grasp for a more visible, tangible manifestation of God.
The Eyes of Faith
Jesus' question, 'Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me?' points to a deeper understanding that goes beyond mere physical presence. It’s about the eyes of faith – the ability to recognize God's presence and character in Jesus.
A Consistent Presence
Jesus had consistently revealed the Father through His actions and words. The 'works' He did (John 14:10-11) and the 'words' He spoke were not His alone but the Father's working through Him. Philip's failure to see the Father in Jesus stemmed from not fully grasping Jesus' identity and His intimate union with the Father.
