We often think love is just a feeling, but Jesus says it's something much more active. What does this verse tell us about the real proof of our love for Him?
Love Isn't Just a Feeling
Jesus connects our love for Him directly to our actions: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." This isn't about a passive, emotional attachment; it's about active obedience.
What 'Keeping Commandments' Means:
- It's not just following rules: While it includes obeying what Jesus taught, it's broader than just a list of dos and don'ts. It's about aligning our lives with His will and His character.
- It's a demonstration: Jesus is saying that obedience is the most convincing evidence of genuine love. Your actions speak louder than your words or even your feelings.
- It's directed by Him: The commandments are specifically called "my commandments" (τὰς ἐμὰς ἐντολάς). They are unique to Him, either taught by Him directly or reflecting His new relationship with us. They are about living the way He lived.
