Jesus isn't just saying he and the Father are united; he's showing that their actions are so intertwined that they are literally inseparable. The words Jesus speaks and the works he performs aren't separate acts of his own, but are the Father's activity flowing directly through him.
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Philip has just asked Jesus to "show us the Father," expressing a desire to see God directly. Jesus responds with gentle rebuke, pointing out how long they've been together and that seeing Him is seeing the Father, due to their inseparable unity. He then elaborates that His words and actions aren't from His own independent will, but are expressions of the Father dwelling and working through Him.
Philip asked to 'see the Father.' Jesus' response points to a unity so profound it redefines our understanding of 'seeing God.'
Jesus isn't just claiming a close relationship with the Father; he's asserting a deep, essential unity. When he says, 'I am in the Father and the Father is in me,' he’s not just speaking metaphorically. This isn't about a mere human being inspired by God, but about a divine indwelling and shared being. Think of it like the sun and its light – inseparable and of the same essence. This union means that Jesus’ very words and actions are expressions of the Father’s presence and power.
Jesus' words aren't just good advice; his miracles aren't just impressive feats. There's a divine authority behind both.
Jesus clarifies the source of his authority: 'The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.' This means his words carry the weight of God’s own truth and his works demonstrate God’s power. He’s not operating independently; rather, the Father is actively working through him. This isn't about Jesus being a mere messenger or a conduit. It’s about the Father’s inherent presence and power being manifest in the Son’s earthly ministry. This unity of word and deed points to the very nature of God at work.
