The repeated "truly, truly" (or "amen, amen") signals that Jesus is not just making a statement, but unveiling a profound spiritual reality. He's the door of the sheep, not just the door to the fold, meaning He is the singular, essential pathway for every individual sheep (believer) to access salvation and true life.
So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After being misunderstood by the religious leaders regarding his earlier parable, Jesus reiterates his point by declaring himself the "door of the sheep." He is explaining that he is the unique and exclusive way for both people and true shepherds to enter into the divine life and relationship with God. This statement sets up his further explanation about the difference between himself as the true shepherd and others who try to lead his flock astray.
Jesus declares He is not just a door, but the door. What does this exclusive claim mean for us and for everyone else?
One Way In
Jesus uses the solemn phrase “Truly, truly, I say to you” to emphasize the importance of His next statement: “I am the door of the sheep.” This isn't just any door; it's the only door for the sheep to enter the fold and find life.
Jesus contrasts Himself with 'thieves and robbers.' Who are these figures, and why are they so dangerous to God's sheep?
Deceptive Dangers
Jesus immediately contrasts His role as the door with those who try to enter by other means, calling them "thieves and robbers." These are not just ordinary criminals; they represent false leaders and false teachings.
