It's easy to read "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" as three separate qualities of believers. But Jesus links them together with "and," showing they are not isolated traits but a continuous flow: hearing leads to being known, and being known leads to following. This isn't just about passive recognition, but an active, ongoing relationship where Christ's knowledge of us fuels our confident following of Him.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus is addressing the Jewish leaders who, after hearing his teaching and witnessing his miracles, are divided. Some believe he's a madman, while others recognize the divine power in his actions, leading to a tense encounter in the temple where they demand he reveal himself plainly as the Christ. He responds by explaining that their disbelief stems from not being among his sheep, which leads into this description of his true followers.
Jesus paints a picture of a shepherd and his flock. What does it truly mean to 'hear' His voice in a world full of noise?
The first and most fundamental connection Jesus describes is recognition through His voice. This isn't just about hearing sounds; it's about discerning and responding to Jesus' unique call.
A Distinct Sound
His "voice" represents His teachings, His commands, and the inner promptings of the Holy Spirit that align with His Word. It's a voice of truth, love, and authority that cuts through deception.
Recognition and Response
True hearing means more than passive listening. It's an active recognition that leads to obedience. His sheep don't just hear; they hear and understand His will for them.
Jesus says, 'I know them.' What kind of knowing is this, and why is it so significant for the sheep?
The second part of the verse reveals a deep, personal relationship. Jesus' knowledge of His sheep goes far beyond mere acquaintance.
Intimate Relationship
This is a knowing that implies care, approval, and deep affection – the kind of intimate knowledge a shepherd has of each individual sheep in his flock. It's not just recognizing them by sight, but by their very nature and identity.
Security in His Knowledge
Ask a follow-up
Because Jesus knows His sheep, they can rest secure. This knowledge means He watches over them, protects them, and has their best interests at heart. It's a powerful assurance against doubt and fear.
The final action mentioned is 'they follow me.' What does this active pursuit of Jesus look like in our daily lives?
The verse culminates in the sheep's response: following Jesus. This isn't a passive state but an active, ongoing commitment.
Active Discipleship
Following Jesus means orienting our lives around His leadership. It involves obedience to His commands, imitating His character, and actively seeking His will in every decision.
Unwavering Loyalty
This following is fueled by the relationship described in the first two clauses – hearing His voice and knowing His deep care. It's a demonstration of trust and devotion that keeps the sheep moving in the Shepherd's direction, even through difficult terrain.
