What does John 10:11-16 mean?

The phrase "good shepherd" here isn't just about being nice; the Greek word implies a shepherd who is excellent and noble in character, the ideal fulfillment of what a shepherd should be. This excellence is immediately demonstrated by his willingness to "lay down his life," a unique phrase in John's Gospel that signifies a voluntary, sacrificial offering for the sheep, not merely risking his life.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What John 10:11-16 means

Jesus has just declared himself the "door" of the sheep, implying he is the only way to salvation and true spiritual life. Now, he shifts the imagery to that of a shepherd, emphasizing his tender care and ultimate sacrifice for those who belong to him. This declaration immediately contrasts him with the "thieves and robbers" who have come before, setting up the distinction between a true shepherd and a false one.
