This isn't just a random detail; the fact that the questioners were Pharisees reveals they weren't just curious bystanders, but representatives of the religious establishment, expecting specific credentials for someone introducing a new ritual. Their position, as guardians of tradition, explains their pointed question about John's authority to baptize, particularly since they held a strict view on who was qualified to introduce such practices.
(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The religious authorities, specifically a delegation sent from the influential Pharisees, are questioning John the Baptist's authority to baptize. They demand to know his identity and legitimacy, implying that only the Messiah, Elijah, or a major prophet would have the right to introduce such a significant religious practice. John's response, which follows this verse, directly addresses their challenge by pointing beyond himself to the One who is already present among them, whom they do not yet recognize.
Why does John the Baptist identify the origin of his interrogators? It wasn't just a random group asking questions.
A Formal Inquiry
John 1:24 tells us, "(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)" This isn't just a casual detail; it explains the weight and authority behind the questions posed to John the Baptist.
When pressed about his authority, John the Baptist doesn't boast. Instead, he points beyond himself to someone greater.

vincentJohn 1:24: "And they which were sent were of the Pharisees."
They which were sent were (εὐθύνατε τὴν ὁδον)Literally, those having been sent were. But the best texts omit the article, so that the remaining words form the pluperfect passive: "they had been sent from the Pharisees." This addition of an explanatory circumstance is characteristic of John. Compare John 1:41, John 1:45; John 9:14; John 11:5, John 11:18; John 13:23.
