God isn't just asking why these nations are bothering His people; He's saying they have nothing to do with Him. Their unprovoked attacks on Israel are seen by God as a direct challenge and offense against Himself, and He promises to repay their aggression swiftly and directly onto their own heads.
“What are you to me, O Tyre and Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you paying me back for something? If you are paying me back, I will return your payment on your own head swiftly and speedily. For you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my rich treasures into your temples. You have sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks in order to remove them far from their own border.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God turns to address the surrounding nations of Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia, directly questioning their involvement in the suffering of His people. He challenges their actions, asking what right they have to inflict harm and if they believe their mistreatment of Israel is a repayment for any wrong done to them. The Lord declares that if they continue to repay His people with aggression, He will swiftly and decisively return that same judgment upon their own heads.
Why does God get so involved when His people are attacked? It's more than just defense; it's a profound identification.
The nations of Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia are directly addressed by God, not just as enemies of Israel, but as enemies of Him. The question, "What are you to me?" isn't about a debt owed, but about a relationship. God is asking, 'What business do you have messing with my people? What connection do you have to me that would justify your actions?' This shows that when God's people face injustice, God Himself feels the sting. He doesn't stand idly by; He considers their afflictions as an affront to Him. Their pain becomes His cause.
These nations attacked God's people without cause. What followed was not a negotiation, but a guaranteed reckoning.
The verse lays out a stark conditional statement: 'If you are paying me back, I will return your payment on your own head.' This isn't a threat God might or might not follow through on. It's a declaration of certainty. Because these nations acted without provocation, their actions were seen as direct defiance against God. He makes it clear that He will not let injustice stand, especially when it's aimed at those who belong to Him. The payment they sought to exact, or the vengeance they thought they were enacting, would be returned to them, 'swiftly and speedily.' This emphasizes that God's justice is not only sure but also timely.
