Here, God doesn't just invite the nations to fight; He challenges them to gather in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, a name meaning "The LORD judges." This isn't just a battleground, but a divine courtroom where He will preside over their judgment.
Let the nations stir themselves up and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Go in, tread, for the winepress is full. The vats overflow, for their evil is great. Multitudes, multitudes, in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following Israel's prayer and God's response in the previous verses, this passage issues a bold challenge to the surrounding nations who have oppressed God's people. God declares that He will gather these nations to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, a place that echoes with the name "Jehovah judges," to personally sit in judgment over them and execute His righteous verdict. This sets the stage for a dramatic divine intervention and the pronouncement of judgment on all who have stood against Him and His people.
Why does Joel specifically name the 'Valley of Jehoshaphat' as the place where God will judge the nations? It's more than just a geographical location.
The name 'Jehoshaphat' itself means 'Yahweh judges.' In chapter 3, verse 2, Joel already referenced this valley, but here in verse 12, the prophet is calling the nations to come to the very place that signifies divine judgment.
Joel commands the nations to 'stir themselves up.' Is this an invitation, or something far more sinister in its unfolding?
The command for the nations to 'stir themselves up' and 'come up' to the valley is not an invitation of friendship, but a prophetic declaration of their inevitable gathering for judgment.
