The call to "sanctify" a fast isn't just about abstaining from food; it's about making the entire day holy, setting it apart with genuine repentance and acts of love for neighbors. This transforms fasting from mere self-denial into a sacred offering, a sincere plea for God's mercy.
Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD. Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near, and as destruction from the Almighty it comes.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Joel is calling for an urgent, all-encompassing day of repentance in response to a devastating locust plague, which he presents as a sign of God's impending judgment. He instructs the priests, elders, and all inhabitants to set aside normal life for fasting and prayer, urging them to gather at the Temple and cry out to God for mercy before a more terrible "day of the Lord" arrives. This call to communal repentance is a direct response to the widespread destruction that has already occurred and a plea to avert even greater devastation.
Fasting isn't just skipping a meal; it's a sacred act meant to draw you closer to God. Joel calls for more than just abstinence.
More Than Just Hunger
Joel's command to "consecrate a fast" goes deeper than simply abstaining from food. The word "consecrate" (or "sanctify") means to set apart, to make holy. It implies that the fast should be dedicated to God, seasoned with repentance and devotion.
When disaster strikes, who is called to repent? Joel makes it clear: everyone. This isn't just a leader's job; it's a community affair.
Unity in Repentance

In times of crisis, where should our ultimate hope lie? Joel points us directly to God, urging a desperate, unified plea.
The Power of United Prayer
