Job's question here isn't just about enduring suffering, but about the very purpose of continued existence when life itself feels like a curse. He's grappling with why God would grant the precious gift of light—symbolizing life and its possibilities—to those whose souls are so consumed by bitterness that they can find no joy in it.
“Why is light given to him who is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul, who long for death, but it comes not, and dig for it more than for hidden treasures, who rejoice exceedingly and are glad when they find the grave? Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?
English Standard Version (ESV)
Job has just cursed the day he was born, expressing his deep agony and wishing he had died at birth. Now, he questions why God continues to grant life and light, essentially existence and the ability to experience it, to those who are suffering so intensely that life itself feels like a burden. He sees no purpose in enduring such misery when death seems like the only true relief.
Job cries out, asking why he's still alive when all he feels is misery. But what does he mean by 'light' and 'life' here?
When Job asks "Wherefore is light given...? and life...?" he's not just talking about sunshine. He's questioning the very gift of existence itself.
Job's pain isn't just physical; it's a deep agony of the soul. What makes life feel 'bitter' to him?
Job's suffering has plunged him into a state where life itself feels like a burden. He describes himself as "bitter in soul," a powerful phrase that captures profound emotional and spiritual anguish.
