Job isn't just asking why he didn't die in the womb, but rather why he wasn't stillborn or didn't die immediately upon entering the world. He sees the midwife's arms catching him not as a kindness, but as the very thing that prolonged his suffering.
“Why did I not die at birth, come out from the womb and expire? Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should nurse? For then I would have lain down and been quiet; I would have slept; then I would have been at rest, with kings and counselors of the earth who rebuilt ruins for themselves, or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver. Or why was I not as a hidden stillborn child, as infants who never see the light?
English Standard Version (ESV)
Job, utterly broken by the loss of his family, wealth, and health, has just finished his initial lament, cursing the day he was born. Now, he turns his pain toward his own birth, questioning why he was even allowed to live past the moment of his arrival into a world that has brought him such immense suffering. He reflects on the care given to him by his mother and midwives, wishing that this same care had instead allowed him to perish immediately upon exiting the womb.
Job opens his lament with a raw question: why was he allowed to live at all? He isn't just sad; he's questioning the very moment of his birth.
A Desire for Peace
Job's first words in his lament aren't about his suffering; they are about his birth. He cries out, 'Why did I not die at birth?' (Job 3:11a).
This isn't a casual thought. It's a deep yearning for a state of non-existence, a desperate wish that his life had ended before it truly began. He sees his birth not as a gift, but as the start of unavoidable pain.
He's essentially asking, 'Why was I brought into this world only to suffer so intensely? It would have been better never to have experienced life at all.' This plea highlights the profound depth of his despair.
Job isn't just asking why he wasn't spared. He's looking back at the very act of his birth and seeing it as a failure of mercy.
Missing the Opportunity of Death
The second part of Job's cry, 'why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?' (Job 3:11b), expands on his initial plea.
He's saying, 'If dying in the womb wasn't possible, why wasn't death the immediate consequence of leaving it? Why was there no moment of stillness, no peaceful end right at the threshold of life?'
Job perceives the act of being born alive, and the subsequent care that kept him alive, as a cruel kindness. The help he received was, in his eyes, what condemned him to enduring his current agony. He wishes that the transition from the womb to the world had been his final breath.

Job 3:11-12 . Why died I not from the womb? — It would surely have been far better, and much happier for me, had I either expired in the womb where I received my life, or it had been taken from me the very moment my eyes saw the light of this world. Why did the knees prevent me? — Why did the midwife or nurse receive and lay me upon her knees, and not suffer me to fall upon the bare ground, t…

Why died I not from the womb - As the other circumstance did not take place, why was I not still-born, without the possibility of reviviscence? or, as this did not occur, why did I not die as soon as born? These three things appear to me to be clearly intended here: - 1. Dying in the womb, or never coming to maturity, as in the case of an abortion. 2. Being still-born, without ever being able…
