Jeremiah 8:5-7

What does Jeremiah 8:5-7 mean?

The verse repeats the idea of "turning" and "returning" multiple times, highlighting that their "backsliding" isn't just a mistake, but a deliberate, tenacious grip on deceit that prevents any genuine change of heart. This shows that their problem isn't ignorance, but a willful rejection of truth and a clinging to falsehoods.

Why then has this people turned away in perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return. I have paid attention and listened, but they have not spoken rightly; no man relents of his evil, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle. Even the stork in the heavens knows her times, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane keep the time of their coming, but my people know not the rules of the LORD.

What Jeremiah 8:5-7 means

Jeremiah is crying out about Jerusalem's persistent rebellion against God, questioning why they continue to turn away from Him, clinging to lies and refusing any hope of return. This follows immediately after God asks if a fallen person doesn't rise again, or if someone who turns away never comes back, highlighting the unnatural and stubborn nature of Jerusalem's spiritual state. The prophet then contrasts this with the predictable patterns of nature, emphasizing that even birds know their seasons, but his people are clueless about God's judgment.

The 'Turning Away' that Never Stops

Ever feel like you're stuck in a cycle? Jeremiah uses a powerful wordplay to describe a people trapped in their sin, always moving away from God.

Jeremiah 8:5 hammers home the stubbornness of Jerusalem's sin. The Hebrew words for 'turned away,' 'backsliding,' and 'return' all come from the same root. This isn't just a simple mistake; it's a deliberate, ingrained pattern.

Perpetual Turning: The verse asks, 'Why has this people turned away with a perpetual turning?' It highlights a continuous, unbroken movement away from God, not just occasional stumbles.
Holding to Deceit: Their problem isn't ignorance; it's a conscious choice. They 'hold fast to deceit' – embracing false worship, false prophets, and false security instead of God's truth.
Refusal to Return: The consequence is stark: 'they refuse to return.' This isn't an inability to return, but a stubborn unwillingness. They are actively pushing God away, choosing their path of destruction.

Deceit: The Idol of Their Hearts

What is it that people cling to when they turn away from God? Jeremiah points to something more dangerous than just error – it's a chosen deception.

The phrase 'they hold fast to deceit' is crucial. This isn't a passive acceptance of lies; it's an active embrace, a gripping hold.
