The verse piles on verbs describing idolatry – love, serve, walk after, seek, worship – to show that the punishment is a direct, even poetic, reversal: the very heavenly bodies they adored will become the public witnesses to their ignominious end, unburied and treated like refuse. This isn't just about death; it's about the utter failure of their ultimate devotion to bring them any dignity or protection.
And they shall be spread before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and served, which they have gone after, and which they have sought and worshiped. And they shall not be gathered or buried. They shall be as dung on the surface of the ground.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophecy begins with God commanding the people's bones, from kings to commoners, to be dug up and exposed. This horrific act is directly linked to their idolatrous worship of the sun, moon, and stars, highlighting how these very celestial bodies they served will now bear witness to their utter disgrace and abandonment. Instead of finding rest in graves, their remains will be left scattered and unburied, becoming like refuse on the earth, a stark testament to their misplaced devotion and God's judgment.
