The Bible is known for its historical accuracy. This verse gives us a very specific date – a date that echoes through Jewish tradition.
Jeremiah 52:12 pinpoints the exact day Nebuzaradan, captain of the Babylonian guard, entered Jerusalem: the tenth day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar's reign.
This date, the 10th of Av, is significant. It later became a day of fasting in Jewish tradition, commemorating the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem.
While other accounts (like 2 Kings 25:8) mention the seventh day, scholars suggest this might refer to when Nebuzaradan started his destructive work, or when the city was breached, with the full entry and the beginning of the temple's desecration happening a few days later. Regardless of the slight difference in timing, the outcome was the same: the devastating end of an era for Jerusalem.
