What's easily missed is that Babylon's "golden cup" signifies not just her splendor, but also the intoxicating "wine" of God's wrath she was used to dispense. Though Babylon appears outwardly glorious and powerful, serving as an instrument in God's hand to judge other nations, this very glory and the resulting devastation she inflicted became a "poisoned cup" leading to madness and ruin for all.
Babylon was a golden cup in the LORD’s hand, making all the earth drunken; the nations drank of her wine; therefore the nations went mad. Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been broken; wail for her! Take balm for her pain; perhaps she may be healed.
English Standard Version (ESV)
In this part of Jeremiah's prophecy, God is declaring judgment on Babylon, the powerful empire that had devastated Judah. Babylon is pictured as a beautiful but deadly "golden cup" that God used to pour out His wrath on the nations. However, this means that Babylon itself, having become drunk on its own power and luxury while serving God's purposes, will now face a similar judgment from God.

The verse presents a powerful paradox: Babylon, a symbol of earthly splendor and power, is simultaneously depicted as a tool in God's hand. This isn't just about judgment; it's about God's sovereign control over history.
