Jeremiah 50:6-7

The verse paints a vivid picture of God's people as "lost sheep," but what's easily missed is that their wandering wasn't accidental – their "shepherds," their leaders, actively turned them away towards the "mountains." This wasn't just about getting lost; it was about being deliberately led astray, away from their true fold and their rightful rest, into dangerous, idolatrous places.
“My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. From mountain to hill they have gone. They have forgotten their fold. All who found them have devoured them, and their enemies have said, ‘We are not guilty, for they have sinned against the LORD, their habitation of righteousness, the LORD, the hope of their fathers.’
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage comes right after God has declared judgment against Babylon, framing Israel's own spiritual wandering as a consequence of their faithlessness. Jeremiah is calling out the unfaithful leaders—the "shepherds"—who have led God's people away from Him, much like lost sheep straying from their fold. These shepherds have misled them into idolatry on the "mountains" and "hills," causing them to forget the safety and provision of God's care.
Ever felt like you're just wandering aimlessly, with no clear direction? Jeremiah uses a powerful image to describe God's people.
A People Adrift
Jeremiah opens with a heart-wrenching picture: "My people have been lost sheep." This isn't just a casual comparison; in ancient Israel, sheep were vital. Losing them meant loss of livelihood, security, and identity.

Leaders Who Led Astray
The core of the problem isn't just that the sheep wandered, but why they wandered. Jeremiah identifies the "shepherds" – the kings, priests, and leaders of Israel – as the culprits.
