It's easy to read "hindermost of the nations" as just meaning Babylon falls to the bottom. But Jeremiah is making a profound statement: the very nation that once seemed like the golden head, the supreme power, will be reduced to utter desolation, becoming a wasteland so extreme it's almost unthinkable for any civilization. This isn't just a political downfall; it's a complete obliteration of its identity and presence.
your mother shall be utterly shamed, and she who bore you shall be disgraced. Behold, she shall be the last of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. Because of the wrath of the LORD she shall not be inhabited but shall be an utter desolation; everyone who passes by Babylon shall be appalled, and hiss because of all her wounds.

This verse comes after Jeremiah has detailed the reasons for Babylon's impending judgment, specifically highlighting their arrogance and exultation in destroying God's people. The prophecy shifts to the utter downfall of Babylon itself, personified as a "mother" to its people, emphasizing that this once mighty empire will be brought from greatness to utter desolation. It foretells Babylon's complete ruin, making it the last and least of nations, a barren wasteland.

The verse addresses Babylon, the capital city and heart of the Chaldean empire. It's referred to as the 'mother' because it was the origin and source of the nation's power and identity, the one that 'bore' or gave birth to its people and influence.

The city that once commanded fear and admiration will become a symbol of desolation.
What does it mean for a mighty nation to become 'a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert'?
The description of Babylon as 'a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert' is a powerful metaphor for complete and utter desolation. It signifies:
