Jeremiah 49:12-13

The phrase "they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup" is a subtle way of highlighting God's covenant with Israel. Even though the Jews were experiencing God's wrath, it wasn't their rightful portion in the way it was for outsiders like Edom, who had deeply wronged them. This verse emphasizes that if even God's chosen people, who might have expected a measure of leniency, are drinking the cup of judgment, then those who are clearly outside of that favor have absolutely no hope of escaping.
For thus says the LORD: “If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. For I have sworn by myself, declares the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse appears within Jeremiah's prophecy against Edom, following earlier judgments against other nations. The prophet uses the metaphor of a "cup of wrath" to describe God's judgment, indicating that even those who might seem least deserving of punishment, like God's own people the Jews who were already suffering, have had to drink it. The question is then posed directly to Edom: if even God's own people couldn't escape, how could Edom, who had wronged them, possibly go unpunished?
Imagine receiving a cup meant only for the truly wicked. What if you, or someone you thought undeserving, had to drink it? Jeremiah uses this powerful image to talk about God's judgment.
The "cup" in Jeremiah's prophecy is a vivid metaphor for God's judgment and wrath poured out on sin. It represents a portion of suffering, punishment, and divine displeasure.
What does it mean when God's judgment seems to affect His own people first? Does that mean the rest get off scot-free?
Jeremiah's message challenges the idea that God's favor automatically grants immunity from judgment. In fact, the opposite can be true:

This passage directly introduces the metaphor of God's 'cup of wrath' being given to nations for judgment, mirroring the specific imagery and theme of divine retribution found in Jeremiah 49:12.
1 Peter 4:17This New Testament verse uses a very similar argument: judgment begins with God's own people, implying that judgment for others will be even more severe, which strongly echoes the logic in Jeremiah 49:12 that if even those specially related to God are punished, how can others escape?
Ezekiel 25:12-14This passage also describes God's judgment against Edom for their vengeful actions against Judah, highlighting the theme of divine retribution for specific acts of cruelty and betrayal against God's chosen people.
Lamentations 4:21-22This text speaks of Edom's impending punishment for their actions against Judah, directly linking their pride and misdeeds to God's coming vengeance, a parallel to Jeremiah's prophecy against Edom.
