This verse highlights the precariousness of safety and leadership even after a violent act is avenged. Johanan and his forces rescue a diverse group—soldiers, women, children, and even eunuchs—but the narrative immediately pivots to their precarious plan to flee to Egypt, revealing that true security wasn't found in their military prowess or rescue, but in a right relationship with God.
Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces with him took from Mizpah all the rest of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam—soldiers, women, children, and eunuchs, whom Johanan brought back from Gibeon.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After Ishmael’s murderous betrayal of the Babylonian-appointed governor Gedaliah, Johanan and the other military leaders rescued the remaining people from Ishmael’s clutches. This verse describes Johanan gathering all the survivors, including soldiers, women, children, and palace eunuchs, whom Ishmael had initially kidnapped from Mizpah and taken toward Gibeon. Now, under Johanan's protection, they are preparing to flee the land altogether, driven by their fear of Babylonian reprisal.
After the brutal murder of their leader, Gedaliah, a desperate group of people were 'recovered.' But who were they, and what did this recovery truly mean?
This verse paints a stark picture of the survivors of Ishmael's violent acts. Johanan, the leader of the remaining forces, gathers 'all the remnant of the people.' This wasn't just a handful of individuals; it was a diverse group.
A Mixed Multitude
These were not just statistics; they were the shattered remnants of a community, rescued from immediate danger but facing an uncertain future.
Johanan's actions seem heroic – rescuing captives from a murderer. But the text hints at a deeper, less faithful motivation behind his rescue.
While Johanan acted decisively to save the people from Ishmael, his leadership wasn't driven by faith in God's promises, but by fear and human reasoning.

Fear Over Faith
This decision, though seemingly practical, led them away from God's land and against His expressed will. It shows that even those who do 'good' deeds can be motivated by flawed thinking, ultimately leading to further ruin.
