Jeremiah 4:6-7

The command to "raise a standard toward Zion" isn't just a call for troops, but a signal for panicked flight, directing the terrified people towards Zion as a last, desperate refuge. This urgency is underscored by the repeated commands to "retire" and "stay not," emphasizing that safety is found only in immediate, decisive movement away from the approaching doom from the north.
Raise a standard toward Zion, flee for safety, stay not, for I bring disaster from the north, and great destruction. A lion has gone up from his thicket, a destroyer of nations has set out; he has gone out from his place to make your land a waste; your cities will be ruins without inhabitant.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet has just described the devastating judgment that God is bringing upon Judah and Jerusalem for their unfaithfulness. In response to this coming disaster, Jeremiah issues a stark command: raise a signal pointing to Zion, the city of God, and urge everyone to flee there for safety, because the destruction is imminent and coming from the north. This warning is not an invitation to seek refuge for long, as even Zion itself will not be secure from the overwhelming force that God is unleashing.
Imagine a city under siege, with panic in the streets. How do people know where to go for safety? God gives a clear, urgent command.
The verse commands, 'Raise a standard toward Zion.' This wasn't a call to rally for battle, but a signal for desperate flight.
The Standard of Refuge
The reason for the urgent flight is terrifyingly specific: a disaster coming from a particular direction. Who or what is this enemy?
The core of the warning is divine judgment: 'for I bring evil from the north, and great destruction.' This 'evil' wasn't random misfortune; it was God's planned judgment.
