For a voice declares from Dan and proclaims trouble from Mount Ephraim. Warn the nations that he is coming; announce to Jerusalem, “Besiegers come from a distant land; they shout against the cities of Judah. Like keepers of a field are they against her all around, because she has rebelled against me, declares the LORD. Your ways and your deeds have brought this upon you. This is your doom, and it is bitter; it has reached your very heart.”

The Hebrew word for 'affliction' here carries a weighty double meaning. What is it, and how does it connect Judah's sin to their suffering?
Jeremiah 4:15 uses a wordplay on 'affliction' that reveals a profound theological truth about God's justice.
Wickedness Begets Misery
The Hebrew word used here (aven) can mean both 'iniquity' or 'wickedness' and 'misery' or 'affliction.'

This is not arbitrary punishment. God's judgment is a direct consequence of the people's own choices. Their 'nothingness' in worshiping idols (vanity) leads to the 'nothingness' of their destruction.

Jeremiah 8:16This verse directly echoes Jeremiah 4:15, stating 'From Dan is heard the snorting of his horses; at the sound of the neighing of his stallions the whole land trembles.' 1 Kings 12:29-30Jeroboam set up golden calves, one in Bethel and the other in Dan, for the northern tribes to worship, establishing Dan as a center of idolatry.
