Jeremiah 37:5-11

What does Jeremiah 37:5-11 mean?

This verse highlights a moment of desperate, temporary relief, showing how human alliances falter: the mighty Egyptian army, Zedekiah's hope, merely caused the Babylonians to pause their siege, not to retreat permanently. It reveals that even powerful military maneuvers can be fleeting distractions rather than true solutions when they’re not aligned with God's ultimate purposes.

The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt. And when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem. Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: “Thus says the LORD, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who sent you to me to inquire of me, ‘Behold, Pharaoh’s army that came to help you is about to return to Egypt, to its own land. And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city. They shall capture it and burn it with fire. Thus says the LORD, Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,” for they will not go away. For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’” Now when the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem at the approach of Pharaoh’s army,

What Jeremiah 37:5-11 means

Jerusalem is under siege by the Babylonian Chaldeans, but King Zedekiah has broken his treaty with Babylon and sent for help from Egypt. When news arrives that Pharaoh's army is on the move, the Chaldean forces temporarily withdraw from the city to confront the approaching Egyptians. This brief respite leads King Zedekiah to send messengers to Jeremiah, seeking prayer and a favorable prophecy, though his motives are mixed with fear and a false hope in Egypt.

An Unstable Alliance

Jerusalem is under siege, and hope seems lost. Then, news arrives: an Egyptian army is on the move! What does this mean for the desperate city?

Jerusalem, represented by King Zedekiah, is in a dire situation, besieged by the Babylonian army. In a move that history would prove disastrous, Zedekiah breaks his treaty with Babylon and appeals to Egypt for help. Pharaoh Hophra (also known as Apries) sends an army, not to conquer, but to relieve the pressure on Jerusalem.

This intervention, while seemingly a reprieve, highlights the precariousness of alliances based on political expediency rather than faithfulness to God. The Egyptians, though a military force, ultimately prove to be an unreliable source of salvation. Their arrival causes the Chaldeans to temporarily withdraw, offering a brief moment of perceived safety, but it doesn't change the ultimate trajectory of God's judgment.

The Deceptive Pause

The enemy has retreated! Is this a sign of deliverance? Or is it a temporary lull before a greater storm?

The news of the Egyptian army's approach causes the Babylonian besiegers to withdraw. This creates a deceptive pause in Jerusalem's suffering. For a moment, it might seem like Zedekiah's gamble has paid off, and deliverance is at hand. People might even begin to congratulate themselves on their political maneuvering.

However, this withdrawal is not an end to the threat. It's a temporary tactical retreat by the Chaldeans to deal with the new Egyptian force. Jeremiah's prophecy, delivered around this time, makes it clear that this respite is short-lived. The Chaldeans will return, and the ultimate judgment on Jerusalem will still come to pass. This highlights how outward circumstances can easily mislead us, especially when we are not aligned with God's sovereign plan.
