Jeremiah 34:17

God's pronouncement here isn't just about punishment; it's a biting irony. By refusing to "proclaim liberty" to their own people, they've essentially rejected God as their master and protector. Consequently, He "proclaims liberty" for them – liberty to be consumed by disaster and scattered to the ends of the earth, free from His care and protection.
“Therefore, thus says the LORD: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; behold, I proclaim to you liberty to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, declares the LORD. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After King Zedekiah and the people of Jerusalem publicly promised to free their enslaved Hebrew brothers and sisters, they soon broke their covenant. Jeremiah declares God's judgment, contrasting their false proclamation of liberty with the "liberty" of destruction God will now bring upon them through war, plague, and famine, resulting in their scattering and becoming a terror to all nations.
God uses the very language of freedom against His people when they refuse to extend it to others. It’s a stark reminder that our actions have divine echoes.
Jeremiah 34:17 reveals a profound principle: God mirrors our disobedience with His judgment, often using the language of our own actions.
When we reject God's order, we don't just lose His favor; we become examples of His judgment for all to see.
The final phrase of the verse carries a chilling weight: 'I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.'

deror · Hebrew Noun

This passage highlights God's deep concern for justice and the sincerity of our actions. The people of Judah, facing destruction, made a public promise to free their slaves, only to revoke it out of self-interest. God's response in Jeremiah 34:17 is a stark reminder that He sees through hollow gestures and that true liberty comes from obedience to His commands, not from breaking them.
