Jeremiah 34:15-17

What does Jeremiah 34:15-17 mean?

The verse highlights that their proclaimed liberty was not just an act of kindness, but a specific command from God, tied to a covenant made in His very house. This wasn't merely about freeing servants; it was about recognizing God’s past deliverance of Israel and reaffirming their commitment to His laws within His sacred space.

You recently repented and did what was right in my eyes by proclaiming liberty, each to his neighbor, and you made a covenant before me in the house that is called by my name, but then you turned around and profaned my name when each of you took back his male and female slaves, whom you had set free according to their desire, and you brought them into subjection to be your slaves. “Therefore, thus says the LORD: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; behold, I proclaim to you liberty to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, declares the LORD. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

What Jeremiah 34:15-17 means

King Zedekiah and the people of Jerusalem had recently made a solemn covenant, proclaimed liberty to their enslaved Hebrew servants, and ratified this agreement before God in the temple. This act, a temporary return to righteous obedience, is acknowledged here by God as a step in the right direction, done in His sight. However, their compliance was short-lived, and they soon reversed this decision, forcing the servants back into bondage.

A Moment of Righteousness

Imagine a whole city deciding to do the right thing. Jeremiah 34 shows us a powerful moment where the people of Jerusalem seemingly turn towards justice and freedom.

In Jeremiah 34:15, we see a snapshot of an action that was right in God's eyes. The people of Jerusalem, prompted by King Zedekiah, proclaimed liberty for their enslaved Hebrew brothers and sisters. This wasn't just a casual agreement; they made a solemn covenant before God in the very house dedicated to His name.

This act of proclaiming liberty was a direct response to God's law, given originally in Exodus 21 and Deuteronomy 15, which stipulated that Hebrew slaves should be freed after a certain period. For a time, it seemed like they were finally obeying.

It highlights that God sees and commends genuine attempts at obedience, even if they are fleeting. The act itself, the proclamation of liberty and the covenant made, was righteous in its intention and execution, at least on the surface.

Sanctity of the Covenant and God's Name

Making a promise is one thing, but making it in God's house, before Him? That carries immense weight. Jeremiah exposes the dangerous consequences of betraying such sacred vows.

The passage emphasizes that the covenant was made 'before me in the house that is called by my name.' This wasn't just a political or social agreement; it was a religious act, invoking God as witness and guarantor. The Temple, where God's name resided, was the sacred space for this commitment.

By breaking this covenant, the people didn't just betray their neighbors; they profoundly insulted God Himself. They 'profaned my name,' as Jeremiah later states (Jeremiah 34:16). They used God's name and His holy place to sanction a promise they had no intention of keeping.

The historical timeline around Jeremiah 34:15-17

This verse captures a moment of desperate, yet ultimately hypocritical, repentance during the final siege of Jerusalem. The people's proclamation of liberty to their slaves was a legal and religious obligation rooted in their covenant with God, meant to be a sign of their devotion and a reminder of their own liberation from Egyptian bondage. Their failure to uphold this covenant, especially after making it so solemnly in the Temple, sealed their doom and brought God's judgment upon them.
